Covering 62-hectares, the Birkdale Community Precinct master plan encompasses the redevelopment of the heritage-listed Willards Farmhouse and surrounds, a historic WW2 radio tower and the development of the Redlands Whitewater Centre, which is set to host 2032 Olympic water sports. The opportunity for Redland City Council and Edge Studio to collaborate on this  two-phase project was a truly unique one.

The focus of  this initial phase was to  garner community feedback which in turn would inform the Council’s Vision Document, a precursor to the precinct’s draft Master Plan. Edge Studio was engaged to create a suite of well-crafted videos which would pique the communities interest to respond. With a focus on design possibilities, history and legacy, Edge Studio created stories with urban planners, historians, relatives of the Willard family and Quandamooka elder, Uncle Bob. Each film highlighted a different element of the Birkdale Precinct’s potential and became an effective catalyst for community engagement and conversation.

To promote the completion of the draft Master Plan and inform the community, Redland City Council approached Edge Studio to develop a film that was future-focused and a reflection the community itself. The result is a heart-warming film featuring children from the Redland’s community as they explore the precinct and talk about their hopes and dreams … there is even a surprise visit from Ranger Stacey!

Phase One:

1 x 90-sec hero

1 x 30-sec cinema cutdown

4 x 45-sec community cutdown

4 x 45-sec designer cutdown

Phase Two:

1 x 3-min hero

1 x 30-sec cinema cutdown

Both phases garnered more response for Redland City Council than any other community engagement program previously executed. This unprecedented response resulted in the following data reported from engagement reports of activity on the council’s website:

Phase one:

1600 survey responses

37k website video views

Phase Two:

1200 survey responses

44k website video views

Community response has been positive and is now playing an integral part in informing the Birkdale precinct Master Plan which will be released in February 2023.
